From Silicon to Settlement: Why Celestia is the Lasertec of the Modular Era

Last week, Goldman Sachs published a 60-page deep-dive on Japanese semiconductor equipment makers, arguing that Intel's capex upgrade creates a structural tailwind for Lasertec, Tokyo Electron, and Disco. The logic was clean: when the largest integrated device manufacturer decides to build two new fabs and commit billions to 18A/14A, the suppliers of non-substitutable tools—especially those with monopoly positions in photomask inspection and wafer dicing—become asymmetric bets on execution rather than speculation.

But reading that report, I couldn't shake the feeling that I've seen this movie before. Not in semiconductors, but in crypto. The narrative is identical: a dominant platform (Intel / Ethereum) announces a massive infrastructure push to regain technological leadership, and the market rushes to price in benefits for the toolmakers. In 2024, that toolmaker for the modular blockchain thesis is Celestia—a data availability layer with a market share over 80% in the niche it created. And just like Lasertec, its competitive moat is less about scale and more about an irreplicable feedback loop between protocol design and hardware-level optimization.

Context

Celestia launched mainnet in October 2023 as the first modular data availability (DA) network. Its core innovation is blobspace—a dedicated block space for rollups to post compressed transaction data, decoupled from execution and consensus. This allows Ethereum L2s to reduce fees by routing DA through Celestia rather than Ethereum's calldata, which has become prohibitively expensive during peak activity. Since launch, over 20 rollups have integrated Celestia, including Arbitrum Orbit chains, Eclipse, and Movement. Since March 2024, Celestia's blob count has grown 3x faster than Ethereum's L2 total transaction volume. Why? Because non-EVM ecosystems (Move, SVM) are adopting Celestia for their own sovereign rollups. Eclipse, an SVM rollup settling on Ethereum but posting blobs to Celestia, alone accounts for over 40% of Celestia's blob usage. But its tokenomics—inflation for staking, and blob fee burning—creates a deflationary pressure during usage spikes. In Q4 2024, when blob usage peaked during the Solana DDoS incident's spillover effect, Celestia burned roughly 5% of its circulating supply in one month. That's a real yield mechanism, not a narrative gimmick.

Takeaway

The Goldman Sachs report on Japanese equipment makers reminded me why infrastructure plays with high switching costs and secular tailwinds tend to outperform their ecosystem's native tokens.
