Not because the company lacks utility—it clearly solves a real pain point—but because middleware valuations in rapidly commoditizing markets have a history of collapsing under their own weight.
Context: OpenRouter is not a model builder. It is a router. Think of it as a Stripe for AI inference, but with thinner margins and more existential dependency. Developers pay OpenRouter to access GPT, Claude, Llama, Mistral, and dozens of others through a single API key. The company manages routing, billing, caching, fallback logic, and cost optimization. The value proposition is clear: reduce integration overhead and avoid vendor lock-in. But the question is whether that value is defensible at scale, and whether $7B reflects a durable business or a temporary arbitrage.
